A woman who worked for an industrial laser company in Mount Olive NJ has been accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the business.
According to Morris County authorities, the suspect was employed as the bookkeeper for Haas Laser Technologies, an industrial laser company located in the Flanders area of Mount Olive, New Jersey.
The Mount Olive Police Department received a report about the alleged theft on February 4, 2016. The owner of the business told law enforcement that the suspect had been deceiving them for several years by embezzling money and depositing company checks into a personal bank account at Capital One bank.
Investigators looked into the alleged fraud and determined that the suspect may have stolen as much as $225,000 from the company. During the investigation, Mount Olive NJ detectives interviewed the suspect and the business owners.
Police eventually placed the suspect under arrest.
The 42-year-old suspect, who is from Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, has been charged with multiple theft and fraud crimes, including theft of movable property, theft by deception, and forgery.
If the suspect is convicted on the most serious charges of theft, she faces severe criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:20-3, anyone who unlawfully takes more than $75K can be charged with a second degree felony. A conviction for second degree theft could result in a sentence of 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
Additionally, the suspect may be required to pay restitution to the victims for the amount that was allegedly stolen.
