Mount Olive New Jersey police recently arrested a man who allegedly attempted to lure a 15-year-old girl into his truck.
According to authorities, the suspect, a local man who resides in the Budd Lake section of Mount Olive, targeted the underage victim. At the time of the incident, the victim was walking along Route 46 near Netcong Road. The suspect allegedly stopped his vehicle next to the victim and asked her if she wanted to join him.
When the girl refused to enter the truck, the suspect allegedly followed her for a short distance. The suspect reportedly drove away after the victim called her mother on a cell phone. The victim’s mother then notified the Mount Olive Police Department.
Mount Olive police officers got to the scene a short time later and conducted an investigation. Police officers canvassed the area in search of the suspect and eventually found his truck, a silver 2003 Ford F-150 pick-up.
The suspect was arrested and subsequently charged with second degree luring.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted on the luring charges, he would be subject to severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:13-6, anyone who tries to lure or entice a child into a motor vehicle can be charged with a second degree criminal offense. A conviction on second degree luring charges could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was transported to the Morris County Correctional Facility in Morristown, NJ. He was being held at the jail on a $100,000 bail amount.
Mount Olive police are still investigating the alleged sex offense. Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident should contact the Mount Olive Township Police Investigations division at 973-691-0900 ext. 7203.
