A Morris County jury recently found a man guilty of conspiring to murder his wife in Boonton Township, New Jersey.
The homicide occurred in August 2011 when the defendant’s mistress gunned down his wife in Boonton, NJ. The mistress fired three gunshots while the defendant and the victim walked together on a Boonton street. The defendant, his wife, and their two young sons were in town to celebrate the end of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan.
According to prosecutors, the defendant actually had three girlfriends – even though he was married with two children.
The defendant and his mistress communicated via cell phone prior to the murder. According to prosecutors, text messages prove that the defendant and his mistress planned to kill the defendant’s wife.
During the defendant’s trial in Morris County Superior Court, in Morristown NJ, the mistress testified that the defendant convinced her to commit the murder because his wife was an indifferent mother who neglected their two children.
The mistress also testified that the defendant gave her the handguns used in the shooting. The defendant also allegedly came up with the plan for the mistress to fatally shoot his wife and then shoot him as well.
Meanwhile, the defendant’s attorneys argued that the mistress acted alone and killed the defendant’s wife out of jealousy.
After the trial, the jury deliberated for less than four hours before finding the defendant guilty of first degree murder.
The defendant was also found guilty of several other criminal offenses, including unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, endangering the welfare of a child, child abuse, and hindering apprehension.
The defendant did not react visibly while the jury announced the verdict.
When the defendant is sentenced, he faces a potential life term in New Jersey State Prison.
The mistress already pleaded guilty to the homicide in May 2013. She will be subject to a minimum term of incarceration of 30 years.
