A former accountant for Kushner Co. in Florham Park NJ recently pleaded guilty to forging a massive company check.
The 34-year-old suspect, who lives in East Orange NJ, worked as a staff accountant for the company.
According to prosecutors, the suspect conspired with a construction vendor to cash a $125,000 check at Jersey City Check Cashing in Jersey City, New Jersey. The construction vendor was not authorized to receive payments from the company.
After receiving word of the fraudulent activity, law enforcement conducted an investigation. Investigators with the Florham Park Police Department and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit eventually uncovered enough evidence to arrest the suspect.
Now the suspect has reportedly admitted to committing the fraud. The suspect recently appeared in Morris County Superior Court and pleaded guilty to forging the check. The suspect entered the guilty plea after making a deal with the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.
The suspect pleaded guilty to a number of theft and fraud charges, including second degree theft by deception.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, prosecutors are expected to recommend that the suspect receive a sentence of 3 years in New Jersey State Prison. Additionally, prosecutors plan to recommend that the suspect be required to pay restitution.
The suspect will appear again in Morris County Superior Court in October for formal sentencing.
