Florham Park NJ police recently arrested an Irvington woman who allegedly left her grandson alone in a parked car. The woman was subsequently charged with fourth degree child abuse.
The suspect is a 56-year-old resident of Irvington, New Jersey. She was attending a dentist appointment in Florham Park and took her grandchild, a four-year-old boy, with her to the appointment.
While the suspect was inside being checked out by her dentist, the young victim was left alone in the parked vehicle. At some point, he reportedly got out of the car and roamed around the parking lot. Some found the boy and notified local law enforcement.
Florham Park detectives went to the scene and spoke to the suspect. She reportedly told police that she left the boy in the car because “he was sleeping and she didn’t want to wake him.”
Fortunately, the boy was not injured as a result of the incident. He was later turned over to the custody of his parents.
The suspect has been charged with child abuse, which is classified as a fourth degree felony. A conviction on the child abuse charges could lead to a sentence of up to 18 months in New Jersey State Prison.
Additionally, it is possible that the suspect could be subject to an investigation by the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P), formerly known as the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS).
