Sparta NJ police recently arrested a suspect who was allegedly drunk and involved in a hit-and-run accident.
Sparta police received a report of a two-car accident during rush-hour traffic on Lafayette Road. When police officers arrived at the scene, they spoke with the driver of the car which was struck.
Thankfully, the driver of the vehicle was not injured as a result of the crash.
The driver told police that she had been struck by a white Jaguar. According to the victim, the driver of the Jaguar fled the scene immediately after the collision. The suspect reportedly headed in the direction of Route 15.
A Sparta officer at the scene began to search the area for the Jaguar. The officer eventually spotted the vehicle near Route 15. According to police, the suspect’s car was easy to see because it was smoking and had suffered extensive front-end damage.
The suspect allegedly tried to evade police by jumping a curb. However, the car struck a number of signs before becoming fully disabled on the highway.
The driver, a 40-year-old woman from Hampton NJ, was removed from the vehicle by police. Police administered field sobriety tests at the scene; the suspect allegedly failed the tests. At that point, the suspect was placed under arrest.
The suspect has been charged with a number of offenses, including driving while intoxicated (DWI), reckless driving, careless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.
