Police are investigating an alleged burglary attempt at a home near Morris Hills High School in Rockaway Borough, New Jersey.
According to authorities, someone tried to commit a break-in at a detached garage located on Overlook Drive. It is believed that the suspect attempted to gain access to the garage through a side window.
This is the fourth burglary reported in Rockaway Borough NJ in the past month.
One of the previous burglaries occurred at a residence on Andrea Drive, which is located on the West side of Rockaway and near the high school. The burglars reportedly gained access to the home by breaking a locked sliding patio door. Once inside, the thieves allegedly took jewelry and cash.
Another burglary occurred at a home on Walnut Place. The thieves got away with a handgun and jewelry.
Yet another burglary occurred at a residence on Drake Avenue, near Firemen’s Field in the borough. The burglars gained access through an unlocked first floor window and stole jewelry.
Although the Rockaway Borough Police Department is actively investigating the thefts, no arrests have been made at this time. It is unclear if investigators have identified any suspects in the burglaries.
Rockaway police have advised residents to take certain steps to avoid being victimized by burglars. Some of the recommended precautions include: locking all windows; hiding jewelry and cash; reporting suspicious behavior in the neighborhood; and notifying the police if you go on an extended vacation.
