Port Authority police arrested a Pine Brook NJ man who was allegedly drunk while behind the wheel of an SUV.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on New Year’s Day. A police officer reportedly found the 35-year-old suspect asleep behind the wheel of his running 2004 Ford Explorer. The SUV was parked on Erie Street, approximately 20 yards from the 12th Street intersection in Jersey City, New Jersey.
When the officer investigated, he found that the car was running and in drive. Thankfully, the suspect did not crash the vehicle because he kept his foot on the brake pedal while sleeping.
The responding officer gained access to the vehicle and put the car’s gear shifter in park. He then ordered the suspect out of the vehicle.
According to police, the suspect was clearly intoxicated. His speech was allegedly slurred. Moreover, he allegedly refused to take a blood test and failed a field sobriety test.
Police also reportedly found an empty bottle of wine of the floor of the suspect’s car.
The suspect was placed under arrest and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI), reckless driving, and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Remarkably, the incident took place just a few blocks away from the Jersey City Police Department’s East Precinct.
