An Oak Ridge New Jersey man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after he allegedly caused two car crashes on Route 23.
The 32-year-old suspect is accused of causing two DWI accidents and injuring multiple motorists.
The Wayne Police Department got a call about a hit-and-run collision on Route 23 north during the early morning hours. According to authorities, the accident occurred near the Mountain View exit on the highway.
When police officers got to the scene, they saw the injured motorist. He told police that a black Dodge pick-up truck had sideswiped his vehicle and then drove away.
A short time later, Wayne NJ police got another call about a hit-and-run accident on Route 23 north. This accident occurred near the Packanack Lake Road exit and also caused injuries.
Wayne police officers went to the scene of that accident and saw debris scattered throughout the roadway. An injured motorist spoke with police and said that the suspect was driving a black 2010 Dodge Ram. He then pointed officers in the direction of a nearby Super Foodtown parking lot.
Police officers quickly tracked down the suspect in the grocery store parking lot. The suspect allegedly stumbled out of his truck when officers walked toward his vehicle. The officers observed the suspect and suspected that he was either intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
The police officers asked the suspect to show them his driver’s license. The suspect informed police that they could locate his license in the center console of his truck. When police subsequently searched the suspect’s vehicle, they reportedly discovered 32 full bags of heroin, 7 empty bags of heroin, a hypodermic needle, and a tablespoon with heroin residue.
According to law enforcement, the suspect failed to successfully perform field sobriety tests. This led police to place him under arrest.
The suspect, who resides in the Oak Ridge section of Jefferson Township, has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI).
The suspect also faces drug charges for possession of heroin, possession of a hypodermic needle, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Additionally, the suspect has been cited for numerous traffic violations, including leaving the scene of an accident, careless driving, and failure to report an accident.
