A Morristown New Jersey man has been accused of sexually assaulting a minor.
According to Morris County prosecutors, the suspect committed the sex crimes between May 9 and May 15.
The victim in the case is a 12-year-old girl, which is why the suspect faces severe criminal penalties if he is ultimately convicted of the most serious charges.
The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation into the suspect after the victim came forward to report the alleged sexual offenses.
While speaking to Morris County detectives, the suspect allegedly admitted to having sexual relations with the underage victim. He was subsequently placed under arrest.
The suspect is an 18-year-old resident of Morristown, NJ. He has been charged a number of sex crimes, including aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and child endangerment.
After being arrested and processed, the suspect was remanded to the Morris County Jail in Morristown, NJ. He was being held at the correctional facility in lieu of $125,000 bail.
The suspect’s initial bail amount was set at $150,000, but a Morris County Superior Court judge agreed to reduce the bail amount because the suspect has no prior criminal record.
The suspect was reportedly born in Ecuador. It is unclear if he is a legal resident of the United States. Depending on the suspect’s immigration status, it is possible that he could be deported after the criminal case is resolved.
