Morristown NJ police arrested a Newark man who allegedly had several hundred bags of heroin in his possession.
According to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect is already on parole for a 2009 manslaughter conviction in Essex County, New Jersey.
Investigators recently concluded a major investigation into what is believed to be a heroin distribution network which spans several counties, including Morris County and Essex County. At the conclusion of the investigation, police executed a number of search warrants.
When police officers attempted to apprehend the suspect in Morristown, he reportedly “created a tense scene” and resisting the officers’ instructions.
At one point, the suspect allegedly got into a red 1999 Cadillac Seville and fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
During the subsequent chase, the suspect allegedly rammed a Morristown police patrol vehicle and then struck a second patrol vehicle which was driven by a plainclothes officer.
According to police, the suspect eventually abandoned his car somewhere in Morristown NJ.
Police later executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home in Newark, NJ. Once inside the residence, officers allegedly found a loaded handgun and several hundred bags of heroin. Prosecutors said that the heroin was packaged for street-level distribution.
Investigators eventually learned that the suspect had left the state and was allegedly hiding out in Rockland County, New York. Morristown police and New York police worked together to capture the suspect; they placed him under arrest.
The suspect has been charged with a number of criminal offenses, including aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding police, and certain persons not to possess weapons. The suspect has also been charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute.
After being arrested, the suspect was transported to a local New York jail. He is being held at the facility in lieu of $250,000 bail. He is set to be extradited to New Jersey, where he will be held at the Morris County Jail in Morristown.
