Police in Mount Olive New Jersey recently arrested a man who was allegedly drunk and passed out while behind the wheel of a running vehicle.
The Mount Olive Police Department got a call from another motorist about a man in distress on a road in Mount Olive, NJ. A Mount Olive patrol officer was dispatched to Continental Drive so that he could conduct a welfare check on the man.
When the officer got to the scene, he found the car in question. The vehicle was stopped in the middle of Continental Drive.
The officer walked toward the vehicle and reportedly found the driver “slouched over” in his seat. According to police, the driver appeared to have “vomited on himself inside the vehicle.”
The officer woke the driver and instructed him to turn off the engine. However, the driver was “incoherent” and did not shut off the engine.
The officer managed to gain access to the car through the passenger side door. Once inside the vehicle, the officer removed the keys from the ignition. According to police, the interior of the car smelled like an alcoholic beverage.
The 32-year-old suspect, who is from Hackettstown NJ, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital in order to receive medical treatment.
The suspect was later charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) and reckless driving.
The suspect is looking at significant penalties if he is convicted on the drunk driving charges. Even if this was just a first offense DWI, the potential penalties include driver’s license suspension for 3 months, a fine of up to $400, and as many as 30 days in the Morris County Jail.
Sometime after being charged, the suspect was released from police custody. He will be required to appear in Mount Olive Municipal Court at a later date to address the charges against him.
