Rockaway New Jersey police arrested a Dover NJ man accused of causing a drunk driving accident and seriously injuring two passengers.
According to authorities, the DWI accident occurred a short time before 10:00 p.m. The Rockaway Police Department received a call about a rollover accident on West Main Street and dispatched officers to the area. When Rockaway patrol officers got to the scene of the car accident, they found the suspect pinned inside the vehicle and a female passenger stuck in the backseat. Police also saw that another female passenger had exited the vehicle and was sitting on a nearby sidewalk.
Firefighters with the Rockaway Borough Fire Department worked to free the vehicle driver, a 40-year-old resident of Dover, NJ. Meanwhile, Rockaway Township emergency medical responders treated the injured passengers. One of the passengers, a 45-year-old woman from Budd Lake NJ, had sustained minor injuries in the car crash, while the other passenger suffered a head injury as a result of the motor vehicle accident. Both passengers were taken to St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville NJ for further treatment.
While emergency responders removed the suspect from the car, they reportedly smelled alcohol on his breath.
The suspect was transported to Morristown Medical Center so that he could be treated for his accident-related injuries.
The suspect was later charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and assault by auto. He was also cited for several traffic violations.
