Police arrested a Budd Lake NJ man who allegedly struck a young boy with his SUV on a Mount Olive roadway and then left the scene of the accident.
The car accident occurred around 12:26 p.m. in the Budd Lake area of Mount Olive, New Jersey. The victim, an 11-year-old boy, was riding his bicycle on Saunders Lane when the suspect allegedly attempted to drive past him and ended up striking him with his vehicle. Afterwards, the suspect reportedly sped off and fled the scene.
When Mount Olive police officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying on the pavement. According to authorities, the young boy was approximately 75 feet away from his bike.
Police administered first aid to the victim and then emergency medical responders rushed him via helicopter to Morristown Medical Center. The victim suffered “significant injuries” as a result of the bicycle accident. The good news is that doctors at the Morristown hospital were able to treat him for his injuries and his condition is now listed as stable.
Mount Olive law enforcement, assisted by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, investigated the accident and spoke with witnesses. A person who saw the car crash said that the suspect was driving a black SUV. Police officers soon located the vehicle and identified the suspect as the likely driver.
The suspect is a 20-year-old man who lives in Budd Lake, New Jersey. He has been cited for multiple traffic violations, including leaving the scene of an accident.
After being arrested and processed, the suspect was released on his own recognizance. He will have to appear in court at a later date to address the charges against him.
