Morristown NJ police captured three suspects who allegedly used counterfeit bills to purchase items from local businesses.
A Morristown detective had been investigating the suspects after receiving a report of counterfeit bills being passed at a Target store throughout June. The detective then got a report of similar activity occurring at a local Walmart store on June 18. The detective, who happened to be in the Target parking lot at the time, saw a male who matched the description provided by Walmart security.
Police then began surveillance on the man and saw him join another man and a woman in a Nissan Altima with Connecticut registration. According to officers, the woman was seen exiting the Target store with merchandise.
Police followed the three suspects as they went to a local Home Depot. It was there that the officers allegedly saw one of the male suspects give $400 in apparently counterfeit bills to the cashier.
Officers placed the trio of suspects under arrest and allegedly seized more than $1,000 in cash. The three suspects are accused of passing off more than $1,500 in counterfeit bills at Walmart, Target, and Home Depot.
After being taken into custody, the suspects were charged with forgery, theft by deception, and conspiracy.
The original male suspect was taken to the Morris County Correctional Facility, where he was being held on $25,000 bail. Meanwhile, the other two suspects were released with a pending court date in Morris County Superior Court in Morristown.
