A high school student who has been charged with the murder of his father allegedly called police to report the incident shortly after it happened.
According to authorities, the 18-year-old suspect fatally shot his father at their home in Kinnelon, New Jersey. The suspect reportedly used a British Enfield .303 rifle to shoot his father several times and commit the homicide.
Police said that the suspect then called a Hardyston NJ police dispatcher and told the dispatcher that he had done “something bad.” According to the prosecutor in the case, the suspect also stated to the dispatcher, “I murdered my father.”
The suspect directed police to his whereabouts: near the Skylands Ice World on Route 23 in Hardyston, New Jersey.
When Hardyston police arrived at the ice rink a short time later, the suspect was sitting in his car. Police placed the suspect under arrest without incident.
Investigators went to the Kinnelon house and found the victim. Police also reportedly found the Enfield rifle used to commit the killing, as well as several shell casings on the ground.
The suspect, who attends classes at Kinnelon High School, has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The suspect was transported to the Morris County Jail in Morristown NJ. He is being held at the facility in lieu of $750,000 bail.
The victim owned a construction company in Pequannock, New Jersey. A cousin of the suspect appeared at a recent bail review hearing for the suspect and said that the family is struggling to understand what happened.
